A neat compost heap can be made using an old rubbish bin that has the bottom removed, and holes drilled in the sides.
Composting can be really easy if you remember the formula: 1 part nitrogen to 25 parts carbon.
Nitrogen [activator] comes in the form of comfrey, poultry and other manure, hair clippings [get them from your hairdresser], coffee grinds [get them from your coffee shop], dandelions, yarrow, fresh grass clippings, tea leaves, Lucerne, seaweed, fruit and vegetable peelings.
Carbon: Dry leaves, straw, rushes, dry grass, paper, cardboard, sawdust, vacuum sweepings, Brassica stalks, pine needles, wood ash.
If you have the time to turn this, and keep moist, [not wet], each week, you’ll have compost in 2 months time.
If you don’t want to turn it, then accumulate, in 2 different containers, the carbon ingredients and the nitrogen ingredients. When you think you have enough:
First, sprinkle the base with some dolomite, then start filling the bin: first layer with 1cm of nitrogen, followed by next layer of 15 cm carbon, followed by 1cm nitrogen, then 30 cm carbon, 1cm then 30cm etc. until you get to the top. Without turning, you’ll have great soil in 3-4 months.
